| Routine
Immuzation Record for all our puppies.
Panacur - dewormer
given 3 days in a row, at 5 weeks and every 3-4 weeks after.
Ivomec - heartworm dewormer given at the 6 weekor
older age. (Depending on the season) We have been informed that
puppies should be protected by the mothers immunities
until they are close to 6 months old. We are aware of special situations
and climates may make it more of a precaution for us to give this
at a young puppy age. It definitely cannot hurt in an area that
is more prone to this. It is suggested you contact your vet about
heartworm protection to be on the safe side.
Intervet - distemper / parvo shot
first given no sooner then 6 weeks and every 3 weeks for total of
three shots.is recommended. (we like to see our puppies up to
5 lbs when we give the first shot so sometimes this is at an older
age then the 6 weeks)
Intervet - Bordetella
given at 6-7 weeks of age. (This is to help them from catching
colds and kennel cough.) Beaware that some breeders are not
giving this to their puppies and then when they do come in contract
with a viral infection it is harder for them to fight it off. We
strongly suggest that puppies are given this several weeks before
they leave the breeders facility. And yes it can cause the puppies
to catch a colds. We refer to this vaccination as the flu shot for
people. And that some people react differently to the flu shot.
ANd the same with puppies. .
When you receive one of our puppies
this is what is included:
Important things to
know about bulldog puppies:
Puppies at a young age are at risk for Giardia, Coccidia and Kennel
Cough which is usually cause by bacteria.
*One of the ongoing risks for puppies is exposure to kennel cough,
otherwise known as 'infectious tracheobronchitis'. Antibiotics are
appropriate if the symptoms are severe, and particularly if the
temperature is elevated for more than two or three days. Bear in
mind that the antibiotics will only be effective against any bacterial
causative agents. The viruses will have to be taken care of by the
bodies normal defense mechanisms just as in you or I.
All “brachycephalicre" Breeds are at risk with the common
cold if left unattended. This is why it is so important to have
good instructions when you purchase a puppy from a breeder. And
also have an experienced bulldog veterinarian lined up before you
bring your puppy home.
*Common causes of giardia in dogs includes drinking from a lake,
pond or stream. Dogs get the infection when they drink water that
contains trace amounts of animal feces. The feces contains a cyst
or small sac that enters the gastrointestinal tract of the dog.
The cysts are the causes of giardia in dogs as they change into
protozoa that divide in two rapidly. The protozoa attach to the
small intestine where they produce disease by taking away nutrients
from your dog. The protozoa also produce harmful substances. Left
untreated, Giardia can damage the lining of the small intestine
and cause scaring. Dogs do not acquire immunity to giardia after
treatment, so they can contract the disease again. There
is no vaccine to prevent the disease. It is stated that
other treatments include adding fiber to your dogs diet may help.
Which is why we start our puppies on NuVet Vitamins at the weaning
age to help protect them from some of these bacterial infections
and build their immunities. You can read more about NuVet
Vitamins here
When puppies are introduced to the outdoors they can pick this
bacteria up easily from contaminated sources. We try very hard to
control our puppy play area but do realise that this can be in our
outdoor environment even with routine cleaning. So we do watch for
this and treat a group of puppies with Metronidazole (flagyl) if
we see visuable signs of the disease. Visual signs can be diiarrhea,
foul smelling stools, lack of energy and weight loss.
*A puppy is not born with the coccidia organisms in his intestine.
From exposure to the coccidia in feces to the onset of the illness
is about 13 days. Most puppies who are ill from coccidia are, therefore,
two weeks of age and older. Although most infections are the result
of spread from the mother, this is not always the case. Any infected
puppy is contagious to other puppies. This is why we keep our puppies
isolated till they are weaning age and after they have had their
first immuzations.Often we do not allow people to view puppies from
other groups in the same area and ask that you wash or disinfect
your hands after handling. We keep our play areas cleaned up after
each group's playtime. We treat our facility much like a baby nursery.
To protect each puppy's health.
Most dogs are exposed to coccidia, and its resulting infection
is not uncommon. Your dog or puppy will develop immunity to it in
his life, and any infection in a healthy dog is usually unheard
of by the adult years.
Coccidiosis is a very treatable dog infection. The two main drugs
most effective are sulfadimethoxine (Albon) and trimethoprimsulfadiazine
(Tribrissen).Though dogs gradually work up immunity to the parasite
as they grow, puppies can be susceptible to coccidiosis, the condition
that occurs when the coccidia in a dog's digestive tract cause an
infection.

Pet Education for more information about your dogs health.
Do not take your puppy into public places unless absolutely necessary
until the puppy has had all its vaccinations. (as recommended by
your veterinarian to ensure immunity against disease).
With so many options for a good puppy food we do not recommend
one brand over another. We currently feed Science Diet Puppy Food.
Our mothers get this along with our puppies. When we start our puppies
out I use a combination of dry crumbled food with canned food and
dry milk replacer supplement. We normally do this as a slow starter
to introduce our puppies to food. (this mash is easy for them to
eat with baby teeth) This can be for a couple weeks before they
are weaned away from the mother. At the time of weaning we like
to see them eating just the dry kibble. Sometimes we will still
have them eating crumbled kibble. I find that the original blend
of Science Diet Puppy food crumbles better for the puppies which
is easier for them to eat. I don't particuarly like the small bits
or the large breed formula.
*Allergies, Itching of the skin is the most common symptom of a
dog allergy. The respiratory tract can be affected causing coughing,
sneezing, and/or wheezing. At times, the eyes and nose may develop
a discharge. Also, the digestive system may be affected causing
vomiting or diarrhea. About 20 percent of the dogs in the United
States suffers from some type of allergy, whether it be atopic dermatitis,
flea allergy, food allergy, inhalant allergy, contact allergy, or
bacterial allergy. See
more information about bulldog allergies at bulldogworld.com.
Picking up your bulldog by his front paws or legs or rough pulling
on their legs and hips can cause dislocation of the puppy's hips
or legs. Please be cautious with letting your puppy jump off furniture
and down several steps. As this can cause injury.
Bulldogs love the water but are not swimmers, please protect them
with a properly fitted dog life jacket when around water. They do
enjoy a small kiddie pool. But always supervise their playtime.
