We often get asked about Miniature English Bulldogs
Is she a Miniature Bulldog ?
At 7 weeks Lucy weighs under 4 lbs.
AKC does not recognize the miniature bulldog as
a registered breed. Some breeders are just advertising on the name
"miniature bulldog" and selling smaller bulldogs as miniature
bulldogs, and other are breeding an english bulldog with a Pug to
get a smaller version of the Bulldog. WHAT IS CALLED A TRUE MINIATURE
BULLDOG IS NOT A REGISTERED DOG THROUGH AKC!!!
All breeders that know their dogs and have been raising puppies
should give you an estimated size on the puppy as an adult. And
of course request photos or even better videos that they cannot
alter to show the parents size. This is probably the most reliable
way of knowing what you are buying if you cannot go to see the breeder
and their dogs.
Occasionally we do experience having a smaller puppy in the litter.
Sometimes this puppy will take off and grow when they are 3-4 months
old. So like children they do go through their growth spurts at
different times.
In the video above the two puppies are from differnt mothers and
are 2 weeks apart in age. Both girls are going to be smaller. The
little dark brindle one was from a litter of 11! And the Fawn and
White Pie Bald was the only puppy which the mother had complications
and did not make it through her c-section. They were both raised
by us and a different mother which had a litter of three. So growing
up they were in an average size group. Meaning "raised by us"
is that we do supplement feeding by tube feeding the babies if they
are not getting enough milk from the mother at birth. Neither of
these puppies would have survived without supplemental tube feeding.
Never bottle feed a bulldog puppy! I will add more on that subject
later.
Do these two puppies in the video have a chance to be as big as
their parents?
Yes they do, however I don't see the big size in their body structure.
What I look for is their overall build. I see both of them staying
short and compact and would estimate their weight at 35-40 lbs as
adults. So are they considered miniature bulldogs? NO!! the miniature
bulldog is just a term. They are considered small english bulldogs.
And YES All Our Bulldogs are AKC registered. Even these so called
mini's We treat each puppy the same with AKC registration. We do
however consult with people on which ones we feel would be a better
size to be a mother. Naturally a short waisted mother with a potential
to carry a large litter will have some difficulties. I remember
all to well carrying twins myself and having them born 6 weeks early!
I hope this has helped those with confusion about reading and
hearing about Miniature Bulldogs.
